DMS Mentoring/Volunteer Services
“Mentoring is a brain to pick, an ear to listen and a push in the right direction.” – John Crosby
Children who have caring, involved adults - mentors - in their lives do better in school, are less likely to abuse alcohol or drugs, and are generally healthier and happier. Unfortunately, too many children do not have positive adult role models who are active in their lives. These children need our support!
DMS employees are encouraged to volunteer as mentors in local schools and in conjunction with other local youth organizations. You may take up to five hours of administrative leave each month to mentor. DMS is challenging each division to recruit 10% of its employees to mentor this year.
If time is a concern … not all mentoring activities require a weekly commitment.
No special skills are required … the desire to make a difference … is all it takes!
What mentoring means ….
Mentoring – a structured and trusting relationship that brings young people together with caring individuals who offer guidance, support and encouragement aimed at developing the competence and character of the mentee.
There are many different ways to mentor, including:
- Work one-one-one with an individual child.
- Share your professional experience as a classroom speaker or in support of a school project.
- Volunteer as a FCAT tutor or proctor.
- Volunteer in the school office, library or computer lab.
- Provide money or manpower for school events and programs.
- Become a Big Brother or Big Sister.
- Serve as a courtroom advocate for children in need.
