What are the meetings all about?
Councils meet monthly. The business portion of the meeting is open to the public. The remainder of the meeting is confidential and is considered “closed session” due to the sensitive nature of case material.
How much time will this require?
Council member time commitments vary due to a volunteer’s available hours. Members spend volunteer hours at council meetings, monitor visits, investigating complaints, as well as driving to locations within their service area. Meetings can vary between two and four hours a month. Monitor visits average near two to four hours including drive time. Investigations vary in the time required. Some cases are resolved with a phone call and others may involve site visits. Council members can work together on large tasks to reduce the workload on one volunteer.
Is there training involved?
A training course is required for all members that is followed by a period of mentorship by a veteran member. Assistance and support are always available to council members from administrative staff and the appellate Florida Statewide Advocacy Council.
