George Burgess

George Burgess is the chief operating officer for Becker & Poliakoff, P.A., one of the largest Law Firms in South Florida, with offices across Florida and in New York, New Jersey, Washington, D.C., and Northern Virginia. He is responsible for oversight and guidance of the firm’s business operations, including all administrative, financial, human resource, information technology, customer service and marketing activities. Burgess works closely with the managing shareholder and all management committee members in the management affairs of the firm.

Prior to joining the firm, he served as Miami-Dade County manager from 2003 to 2011. In that capacity, he managed the day-to-day operations of one of the largest and most sophisticated metropolitan regional governments in the U.S., with nearly 30,000 employees and a budget of over $7 billion and oversaw one of the country’s most diverse local and metropolitan government service product lines in America. Under Burgess’ leadership, the county experienced an unprecedented level of public infrastructure improvements that are reinventing Miami-Dade County as an internationally acclaimed area to live, work, learn and play.

Prior to his appointment as County Manager, Burgess held senior roles with both the county and Miami-Dade public schools. As chief financial officer for the school system from 2002 to 2003, Burgess was responsible for all budgetary, financial, procurement and risk management functions for the fourth-largest school district in the U.S. Burgess served as interim assistant city manager for the City of Miami in 1996. Earlier, he served as the county’s director of the Office of Management and Budget, the deputy budget director, and capital budget coordinator. He began his career with Miami-Dade County in 1982 as a management trainee.

Burgess recently served as Distinguished Practitioner in Residence at Florida International University, where he taught graduate-level classes in public administration. He is also a member of the 2012-13 class of Leadership Florida.

Burgess holds a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in public administration from the University of Maine. In 2007, he received the Distinguished Public Service Practitioner of the Year Award from the American Society for Public Administration’s Southeast Conference, covering the entire Southeastern U.S. He is a member of the American Society for Public Administration and the Association of Legal Administrators. He lives with his wife, Karen, and his sons Ryan and Michael in Pinecrest, Fla.
