John B. “Jay” Smith II

John B. “Jay” Smith II is vice-president and owner of Ajax Building Corporation, a commercial construction firm founded by his grandfather Block Smith in 1958. Ajax has offices throughout Florida and specializes in the construction of K-12 educational, university, governmental, healthcare, and public safety facilities.

Smith was born and raised in Tallahassee. He started in the family business as a laborer during high school and went on to The University of Florida, where he received a bachelor’s degree in business administration. After college, he joined Ajax as a project engineer to gain valuable field experience before moving into the Business Development department. Smith has overseen most of the company’s growth in recent years and is responsible for expanding Ajax’s market during the recession into Georgia, Alabama and North Carolina.

Residing in Tallahassee, Smith is married to Brianne Smith, another Tallahassee native, and they have three daughters. His family is a big part of his life and that carries over to his work life. Most of Ajax’s employees have been with the company for over 10 years—many for over 20 years. Some employees are even working alongside their own sons or daughters, just as Smith did with his father, Doug Smith, who is now retired. That type of loyalty and dedication is a credit to Ajax’s owners and managers.

Active in numerous organizations local and statewide, Smith serves on Holy Comforter Episcopal School’s executive board, Big Bend Hospice’s operating board, and the Governor's Club board. He is also active in Leadership Florida and Leadership Tallahassee. Smith is also partial to the Ronald McDonald House of the Big Bend. As past chairman of the organization, he spearheaded development of the Day Room at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital, which provides families of children who are patients with a place to rest during their visit.
