Project Management Professional

In accordance with subsection 287.057(16), Florida Statutes, "If the value of a contract is in excess of $10 million in any fiscal year, at least one of the persons conducting negotiations must be a Project Management Professional, as certified by the Project Management Institute." Also, in accordance with Rule 60GG-1.009(7), Florida Administrative Code, "A PMP Certified Project Manager is required for any [information technology] project meeting the criteria for DMS oversight." The Project Management Institute (PMI) has stringent requirements for individuals to earn and maintain certification. The division contracts for examination preparation training classes and the payment of examination fees for state agency employees, as well as access to online training for certified state agency employees to earn Professional Development Units (PDUs), which are required to maintain certification. Please note that the examination preparation training class does not teach project management; it focuses on how to prepare for the PMP examination.

Program Participation

The certification process is extremely rigorous and requires a substantial amount of experience and effort to successfully complete; the average participant will spend nearly 100 hours in class or studying for the PMP examination. The division coordinates with agency purchasing directors to identify candidates to participate in the program. Please review the requirements below, then contact your supervisor and agency purchasing director if you are interested in being considered for participation in the program.

The division provides access to online training for a limited number of certified state agency employees to earn PDUs.
